Woodwork, Trim & Staircase Painting, London

Woodwork takes more prep time per metre than a wall — old gloss needs keying back or stripping before anything new goes on, or the new coat never bonds properly. We paint woodwork and staircases across South and West London from £250 per room.

Old oil-based gloss needs a light sand to key the surface plus a coat of adhesion primer before a water-based satinwood goes over it, otherwise the new paint can peel off in sheets within weeks.

A staircase gets painted in stages — spindles and stringer one day, treads and handrail once the rest is dry — so the stairs stay usable overnight rather than the whole run being out of action at once.

Questions

Can you paint over old gloss paint without stripping it?
Usually yes, with a thorough sand to key the surface and an adhesion primer first — full stripping is only needed where the old paint is flaking or cracked rather than just glossy.
